Out of Control Surrey

“Grandma, can we please go ride the surreys today?” I eagerly asked.
My Grandma replied, “Sure.” This was three years ago on a calm Monterey day. At nine I was very impatient so the drive seemed to take forever. Still my enthusiasm rose as we drove closer to the rec. trail. I had never been on a surrey before.
When we finally arrived, we paid for our surrey and we were off!
“Wow!” I exclaimed. “This is so cool!”
As we went along I pretended to drive with the fake steering wheel in my seat. I watched my Grandma, who was really driving it. I got the urge to try it too.
“Grandma, can I try driving the surrey?” I asked in my sweetest voice.
“Sure, but BE CAREFUL.” She commanded me.
When we switched seats and she showed how to steer it and how to trigger the break. We started to peddle slowly down the path. Everything was going smooth until there was a curve. On the curved part of the trail was a small wooden fence used to keep walkers and bikers from going down the rain gutter. I spun the wheel to much and instead of going down the trail we knocked down the fence!
“Ekk!” I screamed!
“Ahh!” My Grandma exclaimed!
In my head I was thinking “Oh, I’m in trouble now.”
But when I looked up at my Grandma, she just laughed. I felt so relieved to hear her only laughing. We stood the fence back up. And we were on our way again.
That was wildest surrey ride I have ever been on. I hope it will also be the widest I will ever go on. I still have not driven a surrey sense. I will be a lot more careful next time. I think I will also wait until I know what I’m doing!
