Lock Down?
“Max here, Sam here, “ announced Mrs. Garret my kindergarten teacher 7 years
ago. It was a normal day at Foothill Elementary School. But my 5 year old self
had no idea what the rest of the day had in store for me.
“Drew, can you take the roll down to the office?’’ asked my teacher.
“Sure” I replied.
As I waked down to the office through the halls, I looked out at the trees.
Something caught my eye, a dark and scary thing hanging on the trees. After
I saw that I started darting down the hall to the office.
Once I reached the office, the office secretary said, “Why are you running down
the halls?’’
“Because I saw something dark and scary in the trees,” I replied.
“Are you sure that you saw something?’’
“Yes. “
“Ok, I will make a call and see if you are telling the truth.”
As I was waiting in the cold office I was thinking, was I really seeing stuff?
As I was getting pretty nervous she said, “There is a Black Bear in the woods;
we will have a 2 hour lock down so that the bear can be captured successfully.
“
As that day went on, know one really knew what had happened because the school
did not want to release the information. During the lock down, I felt that I
should not have said that I saw something; but I am glad I said something. For
me it was a loss I really wanted to go outside that day! I hated that lock down,
but at least they captured the bear and returned him back to his far away habitat.
Now that I look back on that memory I was wondering, how did a bear come into
a human habitat and ecspichilly Monterey. I think it was very rare. But as wise
people said, better to be safe than sorry.
